In order to understand the fundamentals of graphic design, you just have to go through this reading. By the end, you will able to learn the basics for graphic design and will be capable enough to create some exemplary art forms. So, here we go!

The four Pillars:

Graphic designing is the expertise of the professionals where they make content with a combination of pictures to convey messages.

The graphic designing basics entails the following four fundamentals of graphic design:

  1. The color theory
  2. Pictures
  3. Fonts
  4. Alignment and arrangement

Let us see these in a little detail to further understand the concept.

1. The Color Theory in the basics of Graphic Designing

Colors tell half of the story. The right choice of colours will create a vibrant look in your images. To make the images look attractive and convincing, the correct choice of colors is very significant. A strong choice of colors will uplift the design of the whole webpage.

The selection of colors is vital before making the actual image. It is part of the starting plan. It is very odd to know that people do not look at the colors rather, they judge the intensity. Some colors soothe our eyes. Others may be considered ugly, professional, vibrant, nice or weird.

Another factor that is related to the color selection is the contrast between them.

Contrast means how well one color differs from another. This makes the text and background clearer and more understandable. In the field of graphic design, careful choice of colour is extremely important.

For instance, on the selling page, more vibrant colors are used to guide customers to perform some activities like the “call to action” or “click-throughs” buttons.

Some colors are meant to give visual clues.

Suppose, green color is used as the sign of something being accepted, or to go or do something. Whereas on the other hand, red mean something is prohibited. Therefore, the sensible use of colors with the icons or buttons is an important factor in the fundamentals of graphic design. A big red button marking “accept” on it, does not make any sense, rather could result in disaster.

To give you an even clearer picture, here I have indicated some of the colors that are used by the brands to promote their services.:

RED

Displays powerful emotions. Projecting both negative and positive, the use of red color promotes a sense of urgency. Besides, it also boosts appetite, thereby used by the majority of food chains.

ORANGE

A warm color considered a sign of light and fun. Not suitable for use in the corporate. It tends to represent a more natural look.

GREEN

A sign is of health and environment friendly. This color is used by companies that promote health brands and messages. Symbol of growth and financial power.

BLUE

Representation of calmness and leaving a smooth effect on the mind, the blue color is the sign of wisdom, trust, and strength. Opted as a safe choice for the brands, who want to show the compelling space in the business.

PINK

Pink color denotes femininity. Other than that, it is used to show comfort and hope. Pink shows the youth.

BLACK

Symbol of power and luxury. Black adds energy to the sophisticated colors. Mostly, used by fashion industries, but not appropriate to represent health.

WHITE AND SILVER

White is the symbol of purity and cleanliness. Often used to show elegant and modern feel and look. Promotes contemporary, simple and fresh look.

2. PICTURES as Basics for Graphic Designing

Pictures speak louder than words. People by nature, tend to look into the picture to find what their minds are searching for.

They respond well to a picture that shows people in them.

In addition to the content, the quality of pictures also matters a lot for the viewers. And this factor requires even more attention when you work for e-commerce stores.

Low quality and blurred images can create an ambiguous situation for the customer. Because, the images do not properly display the products, thereby dropping their ideas of buying.

Online businesses necessitate having high-quality images to project a clear version of what you want to say or sell.

Hence, choose the HD pictures, that can be appropriately viewed on any device. For instance, for mobile users consider the dimension of images, that are easy to view on handy devices.

Here is the guide to show you which image dimensions will suit the different screen sizes:

  • For a banner image, the width of 2000px and length should be 800px.
  • Choose 1920 px wide and 890 px long as dimension for slider image.
  • For Icons the desirable dimensions are 300px width &220 px length.
  • Choose 425px in width and 220 px in length for Events images.
  • And for the portfolio a width of 1920 px and length of 768 px.

3. FONTS

Although used very rarely in combination with images, but fonts or typography used with the pictures should not cross the images. Fonts is the top-in-line basics for graphic designing.

For the websites, with a heavy amount of written content in it requires the font style and type that is lighter to see and easy to understand.

For headings, both in the text as well as above and below the images within do not cross the word count of 10 words. Heavy headings are difficult to digest. Although, it depends upon the requirement of the content, but try not to add text in the image. These in-image texts may create trouble for the user who views the material on the mobile. It will shrink.

The choice of colors for the text also matters. With light-colored background, a more vibrant and bright choice of colors is chosen to balance the overall contrast.

Remember, it is not only the image that is viewable, but the message in text and its location and color also is worthwhile.

4. ALIGNMENT AND ARRANGEMENT

Once, you have completed the basics for graphic design i.e., planning the images, colors, and what text to write. Now to need to think about how to arrange them in the best possible way. For the overall view, your goal should be to make the composition elaborative and elegant. Remove the messes and visuals distortions, this will enable the viewers to focus on one point only.

The placement of images should such that it gives a sensible and clear way in parallel to the content added.

Also, some pictures are self-explanatory and thereby do not require and text. Their placement should be taken special care of. Avoid unnecessary information. Extra info will convolute and distract the viewer.

Conclusion

Remember, to make a great piece of visual art consider these four fundamentals of graphic design. The printing basics for graphic designers do not need special attention or high-level focus to just gather the things. Graphic design is art with a special purpose, which should be clear and loud. Proper use of symbols, colors, text, and images propagate visual communication are the basics for graphic design. Thereby, their use should be carried in a systematic way to achieve the related objectives.
